Important Eye Damage Research

By Drs. William Grant & Michael Holick (It's Unbelievable!)

Dermatologists are quoting the enormous medical costs of dealing with UV overexposure…but it isn’t from skin cancer, as we are all led to believe! It’s from not wearing sunglasses outdoors and from not wearing eye protection while tanning indoors!

A Towel is Not Enough!

Every day, millions of tanners use hand towels meant for wiping sweat off their bodies to “protect” their faces during their sessions. The women covering their faces with a towel think they are protected from UV rays and preventing dreaded wrinkles. WRONG!

Why Aren’t YOU Wearing YOUR Eyewear?

Salon owners often ask me to share information they can relay to their tanners about how damaging tanning without eye protection really is. Instead of preaching, I thought I might share some thoughts of actual tanners recently posted at an electronic message board called “I am Tan” (iamtan.com)

Are you at risk for Cataracts?

I was standing in the lobby of a tanning salon recently when the salon professional asked to see a tanner’s eyewear. The tanner said she didn’t wear goggles. The salon professional said, “You can get cataracts from not wearing eye protection when you tan.” The tanner kind of shrugged and headed back to her bed with no eyewear—clearly she felt cataracts are what happened to her grandma, not her.

Want to look good? Wear your eye protection!

We all want that perfect tan. And eye protection seems to get in the way. But check out the photo. Do you want to look like this? You are looking at the most common malignancy in humans. You are looking at basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma typically occurs in areas of chronic sun exposure. And chronic skin exposure equals tanning regularly without eye protection.

The Deep, Dark Questions Tanners Ask

You may be aware of the Internet message boards that are run by salon management for salon owners and operators, where they swap ideas on everything from beds, lotions and lamps to political issues and health tips. But did you know there are two message boards that are just for tanners and cater to tanners' questions?

Talk Tanning On TV!

In a recent Friday off, I was sitting like a lump in front of the TV when "Live with Regis & Kelly" came on, a show I would not normally watch. Actor Alec Baldwin was filling in for co-host Regis Philbin. "I'm a tanorexic! I admit it, I really am!" exclaimed Kelly Ripa, the boisterous blonde co-host.

Test Your “Eye-Q”

How would you answer these questions? Do I need to remove my contact lenses before my tanning session? You’re not required by law to remove contacts while tanning indoors; what the law requires is that you wear FDA compliant eye protection during a UV session. If you wear contacts while you tan, they may dry out, causing itching and irritation. The drying is a result of the dry heat and air from the fans common to tanning units. You can easily prevent your contacts from drying out by using eye drops before and after your session.

Save The Earth, Save Your Eyes

Did you know that the earth’s ozone layer is what keeps us from burning up? There’s a hole in the ozone layer, and if it continues to grow, the sun’s ultraviolet radiation (UVR) will become less and less filtered. If that happens, it will change the way plants function and reproduce. Plant-eating animals will run out of things to eat. And if plant-eating animals can’t find food, they’ll die – leaving us with less and less to eat.

Give us those nice, bright colors!

Have you ever wondered if you see colors the same way others do? Have people ever passed you wearing colors that clashed, causing you to wonder if they’d checked in a mirror before leaving the house? Maybe they did look in the mirror, but simply didn’t see what you see. Maybe they’re colorblind.

Hard to see at night?

Tanning Without Eyewear Can Cause Night Vision Loss

For people who suffer from loss of night vision, the effects can be devastating. A night out can be filled with panic when forced to drive amid blinding headlights and the halos of street lamps. Lights seem to flood their eyes; blinding them enough to make reading signs, determining distance, and clearly identifying turn lanes a frustrating struggle.

Why Wear Eye Protection?

Eyelids block less than 25% of harmful UV rays, so closing your eyes is not protecting you from the UVA and UVB rays from a tanning bed. Red, itchy or watery eyes may be an indication of short-term damage - your eyes have been sunburned! Repeated exposure will reduce night vision, diminish color perception, and increase your probability of brunescent cataracts. Surgery is the only cure for cataracts.

Why Disposable Eye Protection?

Eye protection that isn't disposable is less hygienic and runs the risk of becoming contaminated. With disposable eye protection such as WINK-EASE® and VIEWkeepers!®, there is no chance of eye infection! Conjunctivitis ("pink eye") and colds are often spread from wearing community goggles. Just throw our products away after each tanning session! WINK-EASE® and VIEWkeepers!® have no nose bridge to leave a tan line a cross your nose. Our products are completely adjustable, so you can make them fit the shape of the eye and not have raccoon eyes! They are also see-through, allowing the tanner more freedom. There is plenty of room for long eyelashes, and your makeup won't be spoiled by wearing them. Choose comfort and protection - choose WINK-EASE® or VIEWkeepers!® for your eyes!
